Banskà Bystrica

The project involved the construction of a 250 unit residential complex just outside the center of Banská Bystrica in the Carpathian Mountains. The main design challenge was to provide each housing unit with abundant direct sunlight in compliance with Slovakian construction standards while meeting the desired density objectives.

Incorporating a relatively dense urban complex into a low-density residential area was another interesting challenge. Through clever use of the natural terrain and by harmonizing the height of the peripheral buildings with their surroundings, the designers were able to meet all the objectives and create an architectural ensemble of remarkable sensitivity. Three interior courtyards bathed in light create a range of environments that fulfill a number of functions. The three courtyards are connected by a winding pedestrian path—the unifying element of the complex.
