Description
The vélodrome Sylvan Adams - Centre multisports Desjardins houses the Olympic cycling track, which used to be outdoors. It is the only indoor velodrome in Quebec. The building features a rounded shape and a hybrid wood, concrete and steel roof structure with a span of 30 to 40 feet. Rainwater harvesting and a white roof are among the environmentally-friendly measures in place. In the centre of the cycle track, covered by a glulam roof, are running and athletics corridors, an area reserved for BMX ("pumptrack"), a trampoline and jumping area for skateboards and roller skis, as well as multi-sport gymnasium areas. The bleachers seat 400.
Set in a sensitive, natural environment, the new building links up effectively and harmoniously with the many outdoor sports facilities. The designers minimised its footprint by matching the shape of the building to the profile of the track, both in plan and in elevation. The result is a building that is as compact as possible, blending in with its surroundings while at the same time communicating its function.
