Description
The Saint-Louis-de-France school, located in the Ste-Foy - Sillery - Cap-Rouge borough, was built in 1969 thanks to the expertise of architect Pierre Rinfret. Its modern, simple and efficient architecture is distinguished by facades featuring generous fenestration framed by glazed brickwork with aligned joints. A delicately integrated marquee elegantly signals the school's main entrance, which has been cited in Quebec City's 2019 pre-inventory of modernity.
The expansion project calls for the addition of 8 new classrooms, multi-purpose spaces and a new sports field. At the same time, the existing school will be redeveloped to improve its functionality. Positioned in continuity with the existing building, the extension will follow the gradient of the site. The extension scrupulously respects the characteristics of the existing building, notably the evenly-paced banded fenestration, the balance of horizontal and vertical lines, and the dyadic materiality (masonry and aluminum).
Inside, the emphasis is on natural light, ventilation of all spaces (new and old) with complementary electromechanical solutions to perfect the overall design. The architectural qualities of the project are designed to promote educational success, ensure the comfort of teachers and reinforce the school's openness to the community.
