Description
The Espace Vie Le 18 project, located in the Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus section of the Limoilou neighborhood, was already partially built, phases 1 and 2 having been completed in 2012. In summer 2012, the developer and contractor, Concept Saint-Laurent, expressed an interest in working with ABCP to develop the subsequent phases of the project on two lots adjacent to phases 1 and 2. The objective of the development program was to build four new buildings on two lots, with more than 200 housing units of different types (town houses, condos, and penthouses) as well as nearly 4,000 m² of stores and services. One of the main challenges was to blend six- to eight-floor buildings into their surrounding environment while incorporating an existing monument—the Mont-Thabor Chapel. The chapel is the last vestige of the Mont-Thabor Convent, which stood for many years on the western part of the site.
The management of sun and shade through massing and architectural adaptations; the inclusion of numerous private, semi-private, and public areas for strolling; and the construction of an underground parking garage to limit above-ground parking space are just a few of the numerous interventions that make Espace Vie Le 18 an innovative, integrated project designed to revitalize this area of Quebec City. The first 45 unit building, which constitutes phase 3 of the project, was completed in 2014.
