TELUS Rimouski Data Centre achieves LEED Gold certification
TELUS intelligent Internet data centre in Rimouski, Quebec has been awarded Gold certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDTM) from the Canada Green Building Council.
Opened in 2012, the data centre offers business cost-effective data management and cloud computing solutions that deliver the highest level of reliability, security and scalability. TELUS made a strategic decision to locate the centre in Rimouski due to the community’s skilled workforce and green features including abundant green hydroelectricity and a climate that enables efficient cooling.
In 2013, the centre was awarded the Award of Architectural merit from the City of Rimouski in the “commercial, industrial or institutional building” category, as well as an OCTAS award, in the category of “infrastructure for a company with 3,000 or more employees.” TELUS was also a finalist for the Uptime Institute’s “Green Enterprise IT” award for facility design innovation.
Other highlights:
The unique modular design of the data centre allows TELUS to quickly add additional space to adapt to changing client needs.
A world-first, closed-circuit mechanical cooling system delivers outstanding operating efficiency; it is 180 times more efficient than a conventional cooling unit.
Due to Rimouski’s climate, the centre needed only 80 hours of cooling last year.
In the event of a power outage, rather than resorting to battery power the facility relies on inertia wheels, which keep running to power the facility through the event.
