Description
The project to expand and reorganize the Metro grocery store on Rue Cartier was innovative from a number of standpoints. The shopping area takes up two floors connected by two escalators and a panoramic glass elevator. Not only did the project add an extra floor of grocery space, it also created additional housing in this dense Quebec City neighborhood by building four apartments on the top floor.
The building was expanded upward by adding two floors, as the existing building occupied the entire lot. The shell and structure was optimally designed to speed execution in light of the short deadline. To fit the store’s modern new look, the architects opted for large windows in the shopping section, which reinforce the link with activity on the street and provide enhanced visibility and transparency.
