Description

The “Phœnix” received the people’s choice award and third prize in an international architecture competition organized in the leadup to the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. The architectural design team was tasked with enhancing the public areas and gardens. A desire to create a meaningful and welcoming urban space was the reason for grouping together activities in a unified sculptural volume. This approach resulted in a strong, clear solution, in harmony with the presence of a beltway (4th Ring Road) and prestigious Fuxing Avenue.

This project, originally designed for holding sports events during the Olympic Games, eventually became a cultural and sports facility for the western part of Beijing. We incorporated this constraint into the original design to ensure the validity of this Olympic legacy and its contribution to the quality of life of Beijing residents.

The grounds are divided into different areas with plant and spatial themes that reflect the natural affection the Chinese hold for rich, evocative landscapes. The building, which houses sports, cultural, and commercial activities in an indoor city, provides a place to socialize, work, and engage in leisure activities in an environment adapted to the temperate climate of the region.
